‘Ferner Osten’ is one of the most popular varieties of Chinese miscanthus. It forms a compact clump of leaves about 120 cm high. In summer, the foliage is green, in autumn the tips of the leaves turn red-brown, but then turn yellow-brown. It begins to bloom in late August, early September with 160 cm long flower panicles. The flower panicles are red-brown, but the tips are silvery-white. Miscanthus likes a sunny, lightly shaded place, medium-rich to humus-rich soil with sufficient moisture. It does not like stagnant moisture and too dry soil. Cut to the ground only in spring.
