Columnar crown. Orange-red foliage. Intolerant of shade and excessive moisture. Evergreen thorny shrubs. Grows in dry, sunny places. Medium-fast growing, lends itself well to shaping. Edible fruits. Barberry prefers well-drained, permeable soil, which can be both acidic and alkaline. The plant will also grow relatively well in calcareous soil, but barberry will not like excessively wet places.
